Welcome to the 2018/2019 school year and 5th grade!
I am very excited to start a new school year, and the first week went off with a bang. I am very impressed with all students work ethic this week. All were motivated and on task.
The first couple weeks will be spent learning procedures and going over expectations. We will begin math the 2nd week. Most likely, the students will have nightly math homework. I use the same curriculum, Eureka Math (formerly Engage NY), as the students had last year, so you should be familiar with the program. 5th grade curriculum is much more challenging, so please check in with your child frequently to see they are understanding what they are learning. Please email me if you feel there are any problems.
Please make sure to check your child's student planner EVERY week night and ask to see your child's work. After reviewing the work, please sign the planner nightly. The students get "paid" for those signatures, and missing signatures count against their earning R & R. Ask them about R&R.
Please check out the website links under the "Math" tab- "Homework help" if your child is struggling with homework. I am also available each morning at 7:30 to help. Also, please encourage your child to ask questions in class if they don't understand something.
"Reading with Rover" was introduced to all 3rd-8th graders at McSwain last school year. This is a program where school-aged children read to shelter dogs as a way to socialize them and make them more adoptable. The program saw 80+ kids participate last year. The kids really seemed to enjoy it, and I am sure the dogs did as well. We even had a McSwain family find their forever pet and adopted a beautiful pit bull named Sampson.
The program will resume this school year in the fall. Flyers will be sent home, so be looking for them.
Thank you, again, to all the Mustangs who volunteered their time to make the day of a shelter pet!!
